Voiceover videos

A recorded voice with B-roll over it.

Make a voiceover video

Drop a voice memo or any sound file on the home screen. Its words are written, and you cover them with your pictures and clips as Full screen cards. Where nothing covers the voice, the frame is black.

  1. On the home screen, drop your sound file on Drop a take or a voiceover here, or choose Choose a take…. Wav, mp3, m4a, aac, aif, aiff and flac work.
  2. Wait for the words to appear in Transcript. Cut, trim and fix them like any take.
  3. Add the pictures and clips for each line (see Put a picture or clip over your video). Over a voiceover, a card starts as Full screen.
  4. Turn on captions, then export.
A voiceover covered by cards.

A reel that starts with a voiceover is 1080 by 1920 at 30 frames a second. To add a voiceover to a reel that already has a talking take, drop the sound file on the main track, at the cut where it should go.

Or ask your agent

Make a voiceover video from this voice memo, with B-roll from these clips. Change the shot about every sentence.

Your agent brings the voice in, puts Full screen cards on the lines and checks for black frames.

What works on a voiceover, and what does not

Everything about the words works: cutting, trimming, captions, Clean voice, Normalize and speed. Anything that changes the picture of a person does not, because there is no picture.

Works on a voiceoverDoes not apply
Cutting and restoring words, trimming pauses, word fixes, find and replaceZooms and Moves
Captions, text and graphics (not ones that follow a face)Cutouts and Behind you
Clean voice, Normalize loudness, speed, music that lowers under the voiceTransitions on its cuts
Cards with their own filters, effects, keyframes and masksFraming and filters on the voiceover itself

When you try something that does not apply, Yapp Studio says why in one sentence.

Where nothing covers the voice, the frame is black, and filters, adjustments and effects leave the black as it is. A filter, adjustment or effect on its own track changes the cards on the tracks under it, so drag its track above the Overlays track to grade your B-roll, or put the filter on each card. See Choose what a filter or effect changes.

A Split screen card’s Move you has no one to move, so it is hidden over a voiceover, and the other half of the frame stays black. Use Full screen to fill the frame.
